COMPASS HISTORY 1954 to 2025 〰️
The Compass Club opened with its first performance in the autumn of 1954 at the Civic Theatre in Ayr. The leading Producer from the beginning was Bill Grierson, a gifted and forward thinking talent who actively participated with the group until his death in 1984.
There were 2 productions per year at the Civic Theatre on Craigie Road. The list of plays produced can be seen on our Past Performances Page.
The closure of the Civic Theatre in 2000 by Kyle and Carrick District Council was a diminishment to the town of Ayr and swept away a venue which was used and loved by many performing groups from Ayrshire. The site to this day remains vacant and without purpose. An apt reminder of the strategy and priorities of many a town council.
Over the years since the closure of the Civic, the group has performed in Maybole Town Hall, Symington Community Hall and more frequently at the Gaiety Theatre. Our name has also changed from being a ‘Club’ to be more simply called Compass Theatre.
We have a passionate and motivated group who enjoy drama, who enjoy performing and are focused on the future of good theatre in Ayr. It is always challenging to keep good talent, to recruit new folks to the group and to fit play to the resources available.
We are always open to new members and to anyone who would be interested in taking part. There are lots of opportunities to join in , and that does not mean just being on stage. We welcome anyone who wants to act, but also have production, stage, prop and costume needs to produce any show.
If you are interested please send your details using the Contact page. We would be delighted to hear from you.
